Big Decision For Young Adults
Being an entrepreneur is more popular than ever!
Many young adults on social media believe the only way to succeed is to become an entrepreneur. They're constantly fed the idea that being an internet entrepreneur is the key to wealth and freedom, but that's not always the case.
People often forget how hard it is to create a successful business that doesn't require constant work.
I know firsthand that tech sales can provide a happy medium with added benefits.
Almost any entrepreneurial-minded college graduate can compete for entry-level sales roles like SDR, BDR, or ADR at big tech companies. These roles offer base salaries ranging from $50k to $80k, but the main driver is commission. Top performers can expect to make $100k to $145k annually. (I know because I did it back-to-back years and saw friends do it as well.)
Not only can you earn six figures right out of college, but you also get benefits like 401(k), Employee Stock Purchase Programs, insurance, health care, and other perks that help build wealth.
The main argument for entrepreneurship is time and location freedom. However, sales is similar to running a business. If you are organized, run your territory or book of business like an entrepreneur, and perform well, you will have plenty of flexibility and time to focus on yourself, go to the gym, build side businesses, or do whatever you want. Most entry-level roles are 100% remote, so you can work from anywhere. (Problem solved.)
I'm not writing this to discourage entrepreneurship. I have built businesses and thought I would never work in the corporate world. Fast forward a few years, and I've experienced both sides. There are few opportunities for young hustlers to make six figures out of college, set themselves up for $250k+ in 5-8 years, and have the freedom to fund and build side projects.
