Cold Email vs Newsletter For Founders

How Learning Email Can Help New Founders
After receiving a great response from my previous newsletter about cold emails for founders, I decided it’s time to take a deeper dive into the topic!
Cold email remains one of the most effective ways for founders to acquire new customers, yet many business owners fail to take full advantage of this powerful tactic. Today, we’ll explore two email strategies that founders can implement right now: cold emails and newsletters.
Cold Emails: Old School but Highly Effective
Cold emailing involves reaching out to potential clients who may not know your brand, with the goal of securing a call, a sale, or an inquiry. While it’s an "old school" tactic, it works remarkably well when done correctly.
Step 1: Finding Email Addresses
The first hurdle is finding the right email addresses. Tools like ListKit and Apollo help you scrape public emails for your ideal customer profile (ICP). These tools allow you to create a targeted list of potential clients so you can begin sending personalized pitches and booking clients.
Step 2: Personalization and Scalability
Cold email is a numbers game, with typical success rates ranging from 1% to 5%. To improve your odds:
Focus on a Niche ICP: The more specific your target audience, the better your results.
Emphasize Personalization: Tailor each email to the recipient’s needs and interests.
Avoid Generic Pitches: Emails without value or relevance will not convert.
Step 3: Managing Responses
Managing your inbox becomes crucial when you scale cold email campaigns. Keeping everything organized ensures prospects get timely responses. My go-to tool for this is Superhuman, which simplifies inbox management and is trusted by teams at Notion, OpenAI, and more.

Newsletters are a newer, increasingly popular way for founders to connect with their audience and potential customers. Unlike cold emails, newsletters focus on providing ongoing value, making them a perfect medium for building trust.
A newsletter—like the one you’re reading right now—is delivered to subscribers regularly to educate, inform, and engage. Instead of pitching directly, newsletters allow founders to share valuable insights and updates while subtly showcasing their products or services.
As cold email becomes more competitive, newsletters offer a less intrusive way to reach your audience. By consistently delivering value, you can create a personal connection that leads to organic opportunities. For example, my newsletter targets CEOs, founders, and entrepreneurs—my ICP. By providing value, I’ve built a foundation that generates inbound interest for my podcast and other projects.
Newsletters are harder to start and scale compared to cold email. However, they’re incredibly rewarding in the long run, creating deeper relationships and a more engaged audience. Start small: document what you’re doing, focus on providing value, and grow from there.
My Advice to Founders
Both cold email and newsletters are essential skills for founders looking to scale in 2025. Start with cold email for immediate results, then gradually build a newsletter to foster long-term relationships.
Before you know it, you’ll have clients landing in your inbox on autopilot and the foundation needed to scale your business.
