This week, I sat down with Donald Weber, a corporate communication coach who's worked with Fortune 100 executives, members of royalty, prime ministers, and high court judges across Europe. Learning to persuade is "almost everything in communication." We're constantly negotiating and trying to persuade others, whether we realize it or not. These skills aren't just for salespeople—they're essential for anyone looking to lead, influence, or succeed in today's business environment.

Communication is the Foundation of Leadership & Success

The ability to persuade, present ideas clearly, and connect with others determines your effectiveness, regardless of your title. As Donald emphasized, "Nobody makes it to the top by themselves. It's all done on the support of other people."

Key Communication Skills You Need

Persuasion & Influence Understanding what drives the person across from you is essential for genuine persuasion. To be effective:

  • Mirror their language subtly to build a connection

  • Listen for what's not being said as much as what is

Leadership Communication Great leaders make others feel valued and important while taking full responsibility rather than placing blame. They excel at simplifying complex topics for their team and focus completely on one project at a time without distractions.

Presentation Skills

  • Simplify your slides (3-5 points maximum)

  • Remember: You are the presentation, not the PowerPoint

  • Vary your vocal delivery to maintain interest

As Donald noted, "When you're delivering a presentation, you're there not just to present the information, but you should know the information inside and out."

The Difference Between Persuasion and Manipulation

Donald emphasized the ethical line between persuasion and manipulation. True persuasion comes from understanding others' needs and helping them, not coercing them.

"Put yourself in their mind. What is it that they're looking for? What is it that they want to get out of it?" - Donald Weber

This approach means:

  • Identifying what's truly important to the other person

  • Making them feel secure, valued, or important

  • Building genuine connections rather than pushing an agenda

How to Connect with High-Level Executives

When engaging with senior leaders, Donald shared these key insights:

Don't be intimidated - they're human beings just like everyone else. As Donald bluntly put it, "they put on one shoe at a time and tie it up just like you."

Understand their common traits - Strong ego drive, charisma, and listening skills are typical characteristics of executives and politicians.

Learn to recognize authentic interest versus professional charisma. The best leaders make you feel valued, but as Donald warned, don't mistake their charisma for genuine connection.

"If you have an opportunity to give a presentation to the board of directors or the steering committee... I've helped people polish a really good presentation. And as a result of that good presentation of their hard work, they got the attention of senior management, and they got promotions." - Donald Weber

The Truth About Mastering Communication

Like any valuable skill, becoming an effective communicator requires consistent practice. As Donald emphasized, there are no shortcuts:

"It's hard work. It doesn't just come like boom. People want instant gratification. It doesn't work that way in the real world."

Great communicators develop these skills through:

  • Continuous practice and refinement

  • Learning from failure rather than being discouraged

  • Seeking feedback and coaching

As Donald explained, it's about training your communication like a muscle - consistent effort leads to lasting strength. "Fail your way to success," as he puts it.
